Garden Hail Damage Report
Some wonderful soul dumped a baseball in my front yard, so I tried to zero in on it for some perspective.
Some of the hail was the size of a quarter. I've never seen hail that big, before today.
Here are some shots as I walked around, amazed. I've really never seen hail like this, before.
Then I made it to the garden. *shaking head* Oh so sad!
We lost a few basil plants. We have frost damage spotting on all the other basil plants, especially the seedlings. Just before the storm, I planted up two nice bowls for a friend of mine, for Mother's Day. They are spotted with frost-type damage now. :(
The tomatoes and peppers have some substantial damage. Some leaves were shredded with the wind and hail. Some plants just snapped off, too.
Some of the seedlings didn't endure well, either..
Smashed Moon Flower
Swimming Chives
Brown spotted Basil
I watched the storm approaching, live, with @jaredwsmith on ustream. I shut down when the red hit my area. I wasn't prepared for hail to look like snow, all over the ground, and in all the planter boxes. And I never thought about the frost-type damage that the basil would endure, or I would have scooped up the seedlings and babied them more.
Lesson learned.
Thanks, Jared, for keeping us informed!

Good pictures. We saw nothing like that in Mount Pleasant, or at least the part of MP that I'm in. I heard some thunder around the 5-6pm hour. That must have been the storm hitting you.
Hey Jeff,
Thanks for stopping by.
It surprised me how long it endured on the ground, too.
Some of these photos were taken up to 45 minutes after the storm passed.
I'm glad MP wasn't hit like this. I was concerned about what was going on in the u-pick places, down that way.
Thanks for the comment.

Sorry about your garden!! Those hail pictures were impressive! I've never seen hail like that either. Best to you and your poor abused plants. :)
Well, I certainly spoke too soon in my comment last night, about not getting any of the storm. I was awakened this morning at 5am by the storm. Argh.
Hey there! I was just putzing around around and found your blog. I'm in the Goose Creek area and thought it was a bright idea to go grocery shopping in that mess :O
My car got to experience what your plants did...wasn't pleasant that's for sure.
Hopefully they'll recover!
Hey Terry,
"Abused" is the right word, all right. I went out, this afternoon, but I didn't do any recovery work.. I just surveyed, again.. then I found my photos, tonight, of what I took just before the storm. *sigh*
Oh Jeff,
The lightning was so impressive. I only heard a little thunder and wasn't sure where the storm actually was, at 5am. I was just watching the lightning dance in the room. I heard there was a tornado in the DT / Johns Island area, a few hours ago. I just picked up some Twitter tweets. Haven't researched it, yet.
Lpyrbby,
Welcome neighbor. I'm sorry you were out in that pouring ice. I was able to get my vehicle under a tree, but I kept reminding myself that I was insured.
Thanks for stopping in.

Wow! That is amazing. Great pictures!
Sorry to hear about all the damage in your garden. Hope they recover quickly. San Diego's weather is pretty poopy right now, we are experiencing stupid May Gray :( At least the Padres decided to score some points this weekend....
Thanks for stopping by, Joan. It has been an experience.
WB, The Pad's did real well with the pink bats, eh? Sorry about the Gray.. I'm so familiar.
